How Do I Know I Need Leak Detection if the Leaks Are Hidden?

The idea of calling professional plumbers for leak detection in your house sounds like it’s a catch-22. You need plumbers to find leaks you can’t find yourself… but how can you know that you need plumbers to find those leaks if you don’t even know that you have the leaks?

The answer to this dilemma is that although you may not be able to find the leaks on your own, you can still find signs of the leaks. Even small pipe leakage can leave indications that it’s occurring. When you suspect the problem, call on our professional plumbers and we’ll take care of the detection service, as well as the necessary repairs.

Some signs of leaks to watch for

  • Higher water bills: No matter how small the leak, it will cause an increase in your water bills. The U.S. EPA has found that leaks in a home can account for around 10,000 gallons of water wasted per year. When you can’t account for a rise in your water bills, you probably have a hidden leak somewhere.
  • Spots of discoloration on the walls: As water builds up behind walls from a pipe leak, it will start to eat away at the drywall. This will create noticeable rusty and brown discoloration marks on the walls.
  • Odd behavior from the water heater: If the leaks in your pipes are happening in the hot water lines, the loss of hot water will start to trigger the water heater to turn on and off at times when it normally wouldn’t.
  • Water meter test: This is a test you can do yourself to see if there are leaks. Look at the reading on your water meter and remember its setting. Don’t use any water in your house for at least an house. Then check on the meter again. If it show water still be used, then there’s a leak somewhere. Time to call plumbers!
