As Summer Approaches, It May Be Time to Replace Your AC

It may be hard to imagine with the chilly, rainy weather we’ve had in recent weeks, but spring is well on its way to Plattsburgh, NY. Before we know it, warm weather will be here. When that time comes, you’ll definitely want to make sure you have a properly functioning air conditioner. This is especially true if your system is 10-15 years old. However there are some additional signs you should watch out for, which we’ve highlighted below.

Your Home Is Too Humid

Some humidity is normal—even essential—to your indoor air quality. However, an air conditioner that is functioning properly should remove some humidity from the air. So if you find that excessive humidity makes your living space uncomfortable when it didn’t used to, there is likely a problem with your AC. Too much humidity could cause problems with your property as well as your health, and the cost of repairing this type of problem in an aging system is typically not worth the amount of life that remains in your AC.

Your Utility Bills Increased

Is your energy usage comparable to your neighbors? Have you found you’re paying more than them despite this, when you haven’t before? Your system may not be running as efficiently as it once was. According to Energy.gov, your HVAC system can make up almost half of your utility costs, making it the most expensive appliance in your household. So naturally, you want to ensure you’re getting what you pay for.

You’ve Noticed Excessive Dust and/or Noise

If your air filters are clogged, or if your ductwork is damaged, you may notice more dust in your home than normal. Damaged ductwork negatively affects the efficiency of your system, which increases your operating costs over time. If noise is the problem, there could be a loose part within your system. This might be repairable, but many times this is a sign that your system is about ready to be replaced. This is especially true of an older system.
